01What Is a Hollywood Smile?

A Hollywood Smile is a popular name for a cosmetic smile makeover that improves the colour, shape, size and alignment of the visible teeth. It is most often achieved with veneers, crowns or a combination of both, and sometimes includes whitening, gum contouring or other treatment.

A good smile design looks natural for your face. The dentist considers your lip line, facial proportions, skin tone and bite — not only the colour of the teeth.

02Veneers vs Crowns: What Is the Difference?

Veneers

Veneers are thin shells bonded to the front surface of the teeth. They are generally used when the teeth are healthy but you want to change their colour, shape or small gaps. Preparation usually removes a thin layer of enamel, which is not reversible.

Crowns

Crowns cover the whole tooth. They may be recommended for teeth that are heavily filled, cracked, worn or root-canal treated, because they protect the tooth as well as improving its appearance. Crowns require more reduction of the natural tooth than veneers.

• E.max (lithium disilicate) porcelain — valued for its natural translucency; often used for veneers and front crowns.
• Zirconia — very strong; often used for crowns, back teeth and bridges, with layered versions for better aesthetics.
• Composite — tooth-coloured resin applied and shaped directly on the tooth; usually less invasive and more affordable, but more prone to staining and wear over time.

The right material depends on the position of the tooth, your bite, any grinding habits and the look you want. Ask your dentist to show examples and explain the expected lifespan with good care.

04The Treatment Timeline

Porcelain veneers and crowns are commonly completed in one trip of around 5–10 days:

1. 1Examination and planning: X-rays, photographs and a discussion of the smile design. Any gum disease, decay or root canal treatment is addressed first.
2. 2Preparation: the teeth are prepared and impressions or digital scans are taken. Temporary teeth are fitted.
3. 3Try-in and fitting: after the laboratory work, the final restorations are checked, adjusted and bonded.
4. 4Final check: the bite is checked and aftercare instructions are given.

Because preparation for porcelain veneers and crowns is permanent, it is worth asking whether a less invasive approach could achieve your goal. • Brush twice a day, clean between the teeth and keep regular check-ups with your local dentist
